PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma treatment. It is constituted of a concentrated preparation of the patient’s own blood plasma (the transparent liquid part of the blood) and of platelets, the cells responsible for the coagulation of the blood and assisting in the healing of wounds. Because they play such a crucial role in healing wounds, they are rich in Growth Factors which help in the regenerative process of the other cells they come in contact with.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is usually injected on injuries or damaged tendons, ligaments, muscles, joints, and skin to accelerate their healing. The technique has been applied in clinics for the purpose of reinforcing the regeneration of the patient’s skins.
PRP is akin to a serum of youth, made from the patient’s own cells. PRP is obtained by drawing blood, just like for a normal blood test. The blood vials are then placed in a centrifuge for a few minutes, which is going to cause the separation of the red blood cells (later discarded), platelets and plasma from each other. PRP is therefore derived from the patient’s own blood. Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) is an advanced evolution of PRP that delivers even stronger regenerative results. Unlike PRP, which uses added anticoagulants, PRF is 100% natural and spun at a lower speed to preserve more growth factors, stem cells, and fibrin matrix. This creates a slow-release “bio-scaffold” that continues to stimulate collagen, repair tissue, and improve skin quality for longer periods. Being in good overall good health is a precondition to a PRP or PRF treatment. At first, blood will be drawn from your arm into vials. The vials will be sent to the centrifuge to separate the clot from the plasma. During that time, the physician will prepare the area of the body meant to be treated with the PRP or PRF injection by numbing the site.
When the numbness occurs, the doctor will use a syringe filled with the patient’s PRP or PRF to inject it into the desired area of treatment.
Once injected, the platelets will break down releasing their growth factors, triggering the body’s healing process, initiated with the cells proliferation, cells repair and soft tissues renewal.
You may return to your normal activities immediately after the treatment.
One should avoid washing the treatment area for the next 24 hours. Passed a day, the use of hair and skin care cosmetics and topical medications is permissible.
The treatment area might be sore for a couple of days, and the patient may notice some slight bruising and should pain be ever experienced, intake of acetaminophen would help to ease with the discomfort.
PRP and PRF effects on the skin will last several months. Some people may need to have the procedure repeated once or twice a year depending on their expectations.
